| Thousands of Santa Clara residents came to Central
Park on July 4th to enjoy music by the Santa Clara Vanguards
and a spectacular fireworks display in honor of Santa Clara's
Sesquicentennial - the 150-year anniversary of the found of
the City. Santa Clara's Mayor and entire City Council joined
residents and community groups at the special 12 noon ceremonies,
which included a parade of flags that have flown over this community
in the past, and a reading of a special poem written about our
community's history. In honor of the City's 150th anniversary,
the City Council and community were joined by US. Congressman
Mike Honda, State Assembly Member Elaine Alquist, and State
Senator John Vasconcellos, who made special presentations to
the City marking its 150 years of democracy, diversity and distinction.
Mayor Nishio of Santa Clara's sister-city Izumo, Japan, made
spirited remarks at the ceremonies. He was joined by a delegation
of 16 others from Izumo here to help celebrate Santa Clara's
anniversary. One of Izumo's Sesquicentennial gifts to Santa
Clara, a fully mature cherry tree planted at City Hall, was
also dedicated during special ceremonies earlier that morning.
Members of the City's International Exchange Commission and
the Santa Clara Sister Cities Association, helped to host
the Izumo delegation at special activities and events throughout
the week.
Special thanks to the community volunteers, clubs and organizations,
elected and appointed officials, and City staff members, who
worked long hours ensuring that Santa Clara's Sesquicentennial
would be an event to remember.
