| "Austen Warburton was Santa Clara's most
distinguished and respected citizen. He had enormous love for
the City of Santa Clara, for its history, its cultural heritage,
its municipality and its community." (Quotation by City
Manager Jennifer Sparacino in the Santa Clara Valley Weekly,
May 10, 1995)
Austen's great, great, great, great grandfather Jose Ortega
was chief scout for the 1776 Serra Expedition, the first Europeans
to discover the San Francisco Bay. His great, great grandfather
was one of the last Spanish California Governors. Dr. H. H.
Warburton, his grandfather, was Santa Clara's first practicing
physician and his father, Henry L. Warburton Sr., established
one of Santa Clara's first banks. Mary Den Warburton, his
mother, was a founding member of the Santa Clara Women's Club.
Given this list of ancestors, it's no wonder that Austen D.
Warburton aspired to such greatness.
