Registered Nurse - Geriatric
(As-Needed)
 
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing; and
  • One full year of paid experience as a Registered Nurse working with the elderly in a public health or homecare agency
Desirable Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in Nursing with an emphasis on geriatrics
  • Additional years of paid experience in geriatrics
License
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California is required; and
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license is required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Geriatric Nurse is part of the Health and Wellness Program team which provides health information, education, counseling and nursing assessments to the senior citizens at the Santa Clara Senior Center.
 
Typical Tasks
Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.
  • Provides a variety of health assessments, testing, screening, monitoring and counseling on site by appointment or drop-in and to the homebound
  • Visits to homebound seniors with health related needs for the purpose of assessment and assistance in accessing community resources
  • Coordinates special events and clinics at the Senior Center to provide seniors with information on relevant health topics
  • Assists seniors to follow recommended treatments as directed by his/her own physician
  • Liaison between seniors physician and family members
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) concerns/privacy and liability
  • Assessments of common medical problems
  • Laws and regulations pertaining to practice of medicine and nursing
  • Environmental and safety practices, procedures and standards
  • Medications for treatment, side effects and interactions with other medications
  • Aging, death and caregiving issues
Ability to:
  • Perform blood pressure screening
  • Perform blood glucose testing
  • Provide  health screenings and assist seniors in determining health needs
  • Gather complete, detailed and accurate medical histories
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical information
  • Assist if 911 is called, until Emergency Personnel arrive
  • Function as a team with other registered nurses, social workers and home registrar
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Walk or stand for extended period of time
  • Bend, stoop, reach, carry, climb and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties
  • Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines
  • Evaluate situations, identify problems, and exercise initiative and sound independent judgment especially in new or unusual situations
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor at the Santa Clara Senior Center or others as assigned.
 
Other Requirements

Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignmentIncumbents of this classification may be required to work unusual hours in specific situations.
