Cemetery Worker I (290)
 
Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; and
  • One (1) year recent experience in grounds, landscape, street, water/sewer, or building maintenance, or in construction.
License and Certificates
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of application and for the duration of employment.
  • Possession of a California Department of Food and Agriculture Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) in categories B, C, and F is desired.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Employees in the Cemetery Worker I classification perform basic cemetery work.
 
Typical Duties

Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.

Under immediate supervision:
  • Helps dig graves with backhoe and shovel
  • Lines graves with concrete units to receive caskets
  • Positions casket on casket loading device and helps set up equipment including folding chairs for public functions
  • Refills open graves with soil
  • Installs flower vases and grave markers on gravesites
  • May build wooden forms for concrete slabs, using hammer, saw, and nails
  • Lines graves with concrete slabs on bottom and sides to receive caskets
  • Occasionally mixes and pours concrete to construct foundation for grave markers and borders around headstone markers
  • Prunes and trims around trees, headstones and curbs with gas powered trimmers
  • May assist the public in locating grave sites
  • Plants and cultivates lawns; seeds and levels lawn areas and plants new grass
  • Performs basic grounds maintenance duties, including operating trucks, power mowers, edgers, trimmers, trenchers, power vacuums, spray equipment, rototillers, air compressors and pneumatic tools, sod cutters, aerators, floor maintenance machines, chain saws, brush chippers, fork-lifts, and related equipment
  • Positions casket-lowering device on grave, covers dirt pile and sod with artificial grass carpet, erects canopy, and helps to arrange folding chairs to prepare site for burial service
  • Fertilizes, sprays, waters, weeds, mulches, mows and edges lawns at the City Cemetery
  • Sweeps streets and hard surfaced areas
  • Cleans and completes basic repairs of cemetery buildings
  • Makes minor repairs on sprinklers and water lines
  • Plants, prunes, and trims trees and shrubs and
  • Performs related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: 
  • Methods, materials, safety practices and equipment used in grounds maintenance, repair and construction
  • Tools, equipment, and procedures used in grounds maintenance work
  • Techniques and practices of planting, including planting, fertilizing, watering, spraying, weeding, mulching, mowing, pruning, trimming, maintaining, and repairing of trees, shrubs, flowers and plants
  • Basic mathematic principles
  • Environmental and safety practices, procedures and standards

Ability and skill to: 

  • Perform maintenance, minor construction, and grounds keeping work
  • Operate simple construction maintenance vehicles and equipment and make minor repairs and adjustments thereon
  • Perform heavy physical labor
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public
  • Interact tactfully and courteously with the public to answer policy and procedural questions related to cemetery operations, interment, and related services
  • Remain composed and retain a professional demeanor while working with grieving families
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals
  • Walk or stand for extended periods of time
  • Perform work indoors or outdoors throughout the year
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force to move objects
  • Bend, stoop, reach, carry, crawl, climb and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties
  • Organize and coordinate a variety of details to ensure services are properly and accurately scheduled and completed
  • Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines
Supervision Excercised

May assist in the training of new personnel.

 
Supervision Received
Works under the immediate supervision of Cemetery Worker II or III or other supervisor as assigned.
 
Special Conditions
  • May be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and in emergency situations and to be available on an "on-call" basis as assigned.
  • Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shift work, weekends and unusual hours in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
