| Education and Experience |
- Graduation from high school or its equivalent; and
- Thirty (30) months of responsible ground maintenance and repair work at a highly skilled level.

| License and Certificates |
- Possession of an appropriate, valid California Class C driver’s license is required.
- Possession of a California Department of Food and Agriculture Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) in categories B, C, and F is required prior to completion of the probationary period.
Incumbents shall be required to obtain and maintain the above requirements for the duration of employment and any other license(s) and/or certificate(s) that may be required by future regulation for the performance of the job duties.
Current employees appointed to Cemetery Worker III prior to July, 2006 are waived of the required certifications. |

| Distinguishing Characteristics |
| An employee in this class assigns, supervises and follows up on the work of semi-skilled and unskilled workers in the construction and maintenance of graves, crypts, monuments, and related cemetery facilities. The employee has considerable latitude in determining the procedures that will be followed in accomplishing the work. They also act as relief counselor in the absence of the Superintendent, assist the public in the locating and purchase of gravesites. |

| Typical Duties |
Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.
Under direction: |
- Performs normal grounds maintenance duties, including operation of backhoes, dump trucks, bucket trucks, mowers, trimmers, front-end loaders, air compressors and other related equipment
- Backfills, packs and sows grass seed on new or sunken graves
- Inspects the cemetery roads and garden spots for damage and takes remedial action
- Uses a computer to schedule and operate radio controlled irrigation system
- Supervises and participates in the daily work of a group of skilled and unskilled workers engaged in cemetery maintenance and construction
- Supervises and participates in the fertilizing, watering, spraying, weeding, mulching, mowing, and repairing of the City Cemetery
- Supervises and participates in the cultivation of lawns, and the planting, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs
- Supervises and participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of sprinklers and broken water lines
- Supervises and participates in the opening and filling of new and old graves
- Directs and participates in the maintenance of new landscaped areas in the City Cemetery and the refurbishing of old areas
- Assists in the issuance of equipment from the warehouse in the City Cemetery
- Supervises other cemetery workers involved in assisting the public in locating and purchasing of grave sites
- Assists with training staff in proper operation of associated equipment
- Assists in scheduling work for crews depending on work priorities, crew and equipment availability, and weather conditions
- Monitors and assists in project activities to ensure that instructions are followed, deadlines are met, and schedules are maintained
- Inspects completed work to ensure conformance to specifications, standards, and contract requirements
- Coordinates and arranges necessary tools, materials, and facilities needed for burials to verify that sufficient supplies are available and items are in usable condition.
- Investigates work-related complaints to verify problems and determine possible responses.
- May act as a relief counselor during supervisor's absence

- Methods, materials, safety practices and equipment used in cemetery maintenance and operation
- Cemetery rules and regulations involving interring and disposing of human remains
- Techniques and practices of planting, including planting, fertilizing, watering, spraying, weeding, mulching, mowing, pruning, trimming, maintaining, and repairing of trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants
- Horticulture and pest management
- The operation and preventative maintenance of medium and semi-complex construction and planting equipment including computerized systems
- Environmental and safety practices, procedures and standards
- Supervisory techniques and practices, including scheduling, organizing, coordinating, training and evaluating employees
- Computer programs including Word, Excel and computerized irrigation systems

- May be required to work odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties and in emergency situations and to be available on an “on-call” basis as assigned.
- Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shift work, weekends and unusual hours in emergency situations.
