Education and Experience
Requires at least one of the following education/experience patterns: Satisfactory completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units of college including course work in trigonometry, chemistry and physics and three years experience in office and field land survey work; or Possession of a valid California Land Surveyors License; or Four (4) years of office and field land survey work with at least one (1) year in a lead capacity; or Status as a Professional Civil Engineer and two years of office and field land survey work.
 
Typical Duties
In charge of survey work, personnel and equipment; responsible for maintenance of all field notes and survey records; plans and lays out the work of survey parties engaged in performing survey work for sanitary and storm sewer installations, street construction projects, determination of property lines and location of monuments, vertical control, power lines and water lines planning and construction; directs such miscellaneous surveys as those involving sites for city structures or flood control projects; assists office engineering staff by coordination of their work with information concerning existing field conditions; may prepare sketches and do drafting work as necessary; and does related work as required.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of land survey practices and procedures, including the use of engineering survey instruments, standard engineering terminology, and the pertinent principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; ability to plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of one or more survey parties; ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work from plans and sketches; ability to work cooperatively and effectively with employees, public and private officials, contractors, and general public.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the general direction of the City Engineer or his/her designee.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises Engineering Aides, Senior Engineering Aides, and other personnel assigned.
