| Electric Meter Technician

| Education and Experience |
| Graduation from high school or equivalent with two years of mathematics with passing grades and a minimum C overall grade-average. |

| Possession of an appropriate,
valid California Driver’s License is required. |

| Typical Tasks |
In a training capacity learns the electric metering trade by performing progressively more difficult and technical duties in construction and maintenance of all styles of electricity meters and metering equipment.
Under appropriate supervision and after the appropriate level of training: |
- Performs shop and field tests
- Repairs, rebuilds, and wires all styles of electricity meters and metering equipment, including transformer rated meters, pulse relays and recorders
- Troubleshoots complex metering schemes
- Performs routine field checks of complex industrial meters to insure proper operation
- Determines types of meters and related material necessary to accurately record electrical energy consumption
- Investigates customer complaints
- Performs load surveys
- Makes minor instrument repairs and calibrations
- Maintains electricity meter and departmental instrument histories
- Receives and issues electricity meters and related material
- Maintains accurate inventory records
- Operates computers as required for shop work and field testing and interrogation of metering installations
- Performs other related duties as assigned

| Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities |
- Knowledge of the basic principles of electricity
- Knowledge of mathematics through algebra
- Good ability to demonstrate mechanical or electrical aptitude
- Good ability to learn to interpret schematic drawings
- Good ability to learn to perform the duties of a journeyman Electric Meter Technician
- good ability to use and care for testing equipment and hand and power tools
- good ability to follow written and oral instructions
- good ability to establish and maintain tactful, courteous and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public
- Ability to work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals
- Ability to handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines
- Ability to lift 75 pounds of static weight
- Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, crawl and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties
- Ability to identify color and materials normally encountered in the course of work
- Ability to learn occupational hazards and necessary work-related safety precautions

| Other Requirements |
- The Electric Meter Technician Apprentice classification is a probationary only classification
- Applicants must have normal color vision at time of appointment
- Applicants must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.
- Manual dexterity is required for this position
- Incumbents of this class may be required to work unusual hours in emergency and prearranged situations
- Incumbents will be required to attend, on their own time, Electric Meter Technician Apprentice school, which may be located outside the City of Santa Clara
- Incumbents of this classification will be required to have both satisfactory grades and attendance in the off-duty courses of education as may be specified by the City
