Fire Inspector Aide (473)

Education and Experience
Education equivalent to completion of high school. A background in Fire Prevention and/or Hazardous Materials is preferred.
 
License
Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
This position in the Fire Department is responsible for assisting in the conducting of fire prevention/hazardous materials inspections in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings or facilities to insure compliance with established fire codes.
 
Typical Duties
Under direction: does follow-up inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, or any other facility or property requiring the issuance of a Fire Permit to enforce applicable laws, codes and ordinances; inspects new construction; inspects those facilities and systems which the State has identified as requiring regular inspection, including sprinkler installations, hood and duct systems, and halon systems; reviews permitted installation documents; investigates complaints and answers questions relating to fire prevention/hazardous material activities; may issue citations and appear in court; conducts fire drills in schools, hospital, and convalescent homes; prepares and maintains reports and records; gives talks to groups; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Good ability to: speak and write clearly and concisely; prepare written reports; follow written and oral instructions and directions; effectively work independently and as part of a team; gather, analyze, interpret, and present information; learn, understand, and follow the policies and procedures of the Santa Clara Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Fire Marshal and Hazardous Materials Administrator or other supervisor as assigned.

Other Requirements
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
 
Special Conditions
May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays for the purpose of conducting inspections.
 
Conflict of Interest
Incumbents of this position are required to file a Conflict of Interest statement upon assuming office, annually, and upon leaving office, in accordance with City Manager Directive 100.
