Materials Handler/Auto Parts Technician (571)

 
Education and Experience
Education equivalent to completion of high school and four (4) years of experience as an automotive parts counterperson in an automotive or truck/equipment facility.  Working knowledge and experience with a computerized automotive parts system (i.e. Faster, Triad, etc.) is desirable.
 
License
Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license is required.  Possession of a valid A.S.E. certificate for either Automotive Parts Specialist or Medium/Heavy Truck Parts is desired at time of application, and required at end of probationary period; maintenance of one of the required certificates is a condition of continued eligibility to hold status in this position.    
 
Typical Tasks
Under direct supervision: maintains minimum levels of parts and supplies through data processing records and visual inspection, initiating purchase requests as appropriate to maintain minimum parts inventory; maintains systemized storage facilities insuring proper security for parts and tools; maintains a comprehensive record system on parts, tools, issuing accounts, and analysis records for quality control and warranty; takes periodic parts room inventory and establishes minimum supply levels on the basis of operational needs; advises supervisor of obsolete parts for turn in; issues parts on the basis of requisitions submitted by mechanics, supplementing orders with related parts in accordance with knowledge of normal wear process, sound repair procedures, and interchangeability of parts; maintains parts and parts room in a clean and orderly manner; and performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of: automotive and heavy duty equipment parts, accessories, and tools; techniques of receiving, storing, and issuing parts and supplies; scheduling and record keeping; and local sources of supply.  Good ability to: follow oral and simple written instructions; maintain records and prepare reports using a computerized equipment maintenance system; operate forklift and related material handling equipment; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees, departments, and divisions; write legibly and solve simple arithmetic problems; and lift and carry 45 lbs. of weight.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Automotive Services Maintenance Supervisor, or other supervisor as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises the Purchasing Utility Worker and other classifications as assigned.
 
Other Requirements
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
