Education and Experience
Education and experience required to be a Medical Doctor, licensed to practice in the State of California. Experience or specialty in Emergency Medicine is strongly desired. Experience as a field Paramedic (EMT-P) is recommended.
 
License & Certification
Must be: licensed to practice medicine in the State of California; licensed as a Practitioner with the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970; and licensed to obtain and dispense Schedule II Narcotics and Schedule IV controlled substances. Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required.
 
Typical Duties
Participates fully in the process, design, implementation, and revision of the Emergency Medical Services Division's Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement (QA/QI) program; serves as a case reviewer; provides direct field observation of the delivery of Emergency Medical Services; provides formal and informal educational presentations to the Fire Department; responds, when available, to major emergencies to provide consultative services; approves the narcotic purchasing and control plan, and signs for the purchase of narcotics; serves as liaison with the local medical community, and with the Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMSA) of the County of Santa Clara; makes recommendations to the Fire Department regarding the delivery of emergency medical services; provides City with written reports upon request; and performs related duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the EMSA Scope of Practice. Working knowledge of the field delivery of emergency medical services. Knowledge of: Santa Clara County Emergency Medical Services Policies and Protocols, and State of California EMSA Policies; and contemporary issues in emergency medical services. Ability to: prepare and write reports; research information and make recommendations; conduct presentations; and communicate effectively with associates and departmental personnel.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the direction of the Emergency Medical Services Battalion Chief or other management personnel as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
May assist in the training, counseling, and direction of personnel performing paramedic assignments.
 
Other Requirements
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job classification.
