| Education and Experience |
| Graduation from an accredited
college or university with a major in recreation, physical education,
or an approved related field; and one year of paid experience in supervision
of public recreation programs for older adults involving supervision
of part-time recreation leaders, personnel, and volunteers (2,000
hours of part-time and/or internship experience is equivalent to one
year of full-time experience). |

| Possession of an appropriate,
valid California driver’s license is required. |

| Distinguishing Characteristics |
| This is a professional position
in the classified service, responsible for assisting the Senior Center
Director in a community-wide program of recreational activities for
older adults. The incumbent is expected to perform routine and complex
staff work in recreation and take specific responsibility for assigned
portions of recreation programs and supervisory work of temporary
personnel. |

| Typical Duties |
| Under general supervision:
plans and organizes assigned recreational activities; works with subordinate
recreation workers and volunteers to develop programs suitable for
and adapted to the needs of senior citizens; interviews and trains
temporary personnel and volunteers; assists in planning and organizing
general City-wide recreational programs and in evaluating them with
the Senior Center Director; prepares and controls equipment inventory,
stock deliveries, and inspects and oversees equipment care and use;
interprets departmental policies to the public; develops and prepares
routine and complex reports; plans special programs; assists in preparing
budget recommendations; schedules and supervises the use of facilities
for participant groups; collects and accounts for fees and charges;
approves applications for use of the Senior Center space and equipment;
and performs other related duties as assigned. |

| Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities |
| Thorough knowledge of: modern
recreation principles and practices and recreational activities for
older adults. Satisfactory ability to: organize and direct activities
and special events; direct the activities of recreational workers
and related personnel; speak effectively at public gatherings; and
work cooperatively with co-workers and the public. |

| Special Conditions |
| Incumbents in this classification
may be required to work unusual hours and a varying workweek to meet
the recreational needs of Santa Clara senior citizens. |

| Incumbents in this position
are required to file a Conflict of Interest statement upon assuming
office, annually, and upon leaving office, in accordance with City
Manager Directive 100. |
