Senior Distribution Supervisor (727)
 
Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and education equivalent to ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in the design of overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems, at least four (4) of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. An A.A. degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of the required design experience, or a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for four (4) years of the required design experience only.
 
License
Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license is required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a supervisory position in the classified service responsible for the conduct of a significant phase or function of electrical design work, including overhead transmission and distribution line projects. Work involves the application of basic electrical design and supervisory knowledge and techniques. Work is ordinarily performed under the direction of the Division Manager of Engineering who makes general assignments and reviews work to assure that it is conducted according to instructions and in conformity with accepted engineering practices.
 
Typical Duties
Under general direction: supervises and participates in the preparation of plans and specifications for the construction and repair of underground and overhead transmission and distribution lines, in accordance with Public Utilities Commission (PUC) General Orders and City construction standards; performs complex calculations and reviews estimates of time and material costs; supervises the preparation or prepares City construction and equipment procurement standards, and supervises distribution equipment procurement and inventory; assigns and supervises examination of plans and specifications prepared by other departments and agencies, determines effect of proposed work on existing electric utility facilities, determines feasibility of alternate construction proposals, and prepares estimates of relocation costs; coordinates electric utility construction projects with private contractors and City construction crews; participates in electrical system planning and the preparation of engineering reports and studies, assigning and reviewing work of subordinate technical personnel; assists in budget preparation and administration; coordinates electric utility activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections, and with outside agencies; serves as staff to a variety of City commissions, boards, and committees on electric utility matters; supervises, coordinates work, trains, and evaluates technical and professional personnel; and performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of: the principles and practices of electric utility design as applied to the estimating, drafting, and construction of commercial, industrial, residential electric service, streetlight projects, and overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems; methods and materials used in the construction of electric utility facilities; technical report writing, computers, and computer programs; and policies and regulations governing the construction, extension, and maintenance of electric utility facilities, including the interrelationships and impacts of other City, governmental, and private activities on electric service requirements and facilities. Good ability to: perform technical research and provide reliable advice on engineering problems; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; perform necessary engineering calculations with speed and accuracy; supervise, train, and evaluate professional, technical, and/or clerical personnel; prepare complete plans, estimates, and materials of assigned electric utility projects; and use and care of electric utility instruments and equipment.
 
Supervision Received
Works under the general direction of the Director of Electric Utility, Assistant Director of Electric Utility, Electric Division Manager, or other supervisor as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises professional, technical, and other personnel as assigned.
 
Other Requirements
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
 
Special Conditions
May be required to work unusual hours in emergency situations, or at other than regular job site.
 
Conflict of Interest
Incumbents in this position are required to file a Conflict of Interest statement upon assuming office, annually, and upon leaving office, in accordance with City Manager Directive 100.
