Senior Electric Meter Technician (729)
 
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and
  • Four (4) years of journey-level meter technician experience with an electric utility performing duties that include testing, calibration, and installation of electric revenue meters and metering equipment. One (1) year of the required experience must include supervising the work of journey-level meter technicians and related personnel.
Possible Substitution:
  • An additional three (3) years of journey-level Electric Meter Technician experience with the City of Santa Clara may substitute for the supervisory experience requirement.
License
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Senior Electric Meter Technician is the advanced journey level technical classification in the Electric Meter Technician series. This classification serves as a lead, performing and supervising assigned work related to both revenue and non-revenue electric metering. This class is distinguished from the Electric Meter Technician in that it exercises a higher level of independent judgment and supervisory responsibility.
 
Typical Duties
Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.

Under general supervision:
  • Installs, adjusts, functionally tests, troubleshoots, repairs and/or overhauls all types of electric meters and metering equipment
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and diagrams to facilitate the construction and maintenance of electric metering facilities
  • Supervises and trains Electric Meter Shop personnel and other employees as assigned
  • Monitors the assignments and the performance of Electric Meter Technician Apprentices
  • Consults with and advises management regarding personnel, equipment, and materials related to Electric Meter Shop work
  • Inspects shop and work sites, as appropriate, to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Logs and reports deficiencies, analyzes failures and takes corrective action to insure safety and reliability
  • Approves and inspects new metering installations and interacts with manufacturers and contractors on a routine basis
  • Takes readings, keeps records and performs a variety of skilled electrical and mechanical work related to the calibration, installation, and maintenance of electric metering equipment
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of:
  • Electric meters and other devices used for the measurement of electricity
  • Equipment, methods, and metering standards pertaining to electric meter installation, inspection and testing
Considerable ability to:
  • Read and interpret electrical plans and specifications
  • Organize, supervise, train, and instruct others in electrical work
  • Understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Work efficiently and safely
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Work in a team based environment and achieve common goals
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Field Foreperson, Electric Superintendent, or other supervisor as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
Supervises the work of Electric Meter Technicians, Electric Meter Technician Apprentices, or other assigned personnel in the construction and maintenance of electric metering installations.
 
Other Requirements
  • Must possess normal color vision at time of appointment
  • Manual dexterity is required for this position
  • May be required to work unusual hours in emergency situations and be available on an "on-call" basis
  • Must keep informed of changes in practices, procedures, equipment, and materials necessary to perform functions required of Electric Meter Shop personnel
  • Must occasionally work at a considerable height above the ground
  • Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment
