| Education and Experience |
| Graduation from high school
or equivalent; and four years of journey-level Lineman/Linewoman experience
performing duties that include the installation and maintenance of
underground electrical distribution equipment and substructures, at
least one year of which must be at the Line Crew Leader level. At
least one year of the above experience must be with the City of Santa
Clara. An additional three years of journey-level Lineman/Linewoman
experience with the City of Santa Clara may substitute for the Line
Crew Leader experience. |

| Typical Duties |
| Supervises Underground Construction
Crew in the construction and maintenance of underground distribution
and transmission lines; supervises and assists a crew in the construction
of electrical distribution and transmission systems consisting of
duct work, cables, transformers, switches and other auxiliary equipment;
supervises and assists in the setting of power and street light poles,
manholes, and vaults; supervises and assists in the changing of circuits,
transferring of services; installs transformers, vacuum switches,
capacitors, and other distribution equipment; repairs, removes, and
replaces defective electric cables, poles, and related equipment;
climbs poles as required; supervises and conducts the on-the-job training
of Line Crew Leader, Lineman/Linewoman, Lineman/Linewoman Apprentice,
Electric Equipment Operator, Electric Utility Helper Driver, Electric
Utility Helper, or other assigned personnel in the approved methods
and practices of electrical underground construction and maintenance
work; inspects for unsafe working conditions and takes steps to remedy
them or reports them to higher authority; confers with and advises
supervisor concerning projected work schedules, necessary materials
and crew requirements; prepares routine time and material reports;
assists or leads in various training programs, including first aid
and safety training; evaluates the performance of personnel under
his/her supervision; does other related work as required. |

| Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities |
| Thorough knowledge of the:
construction and maintenance of underground duct systems; tools and
materials commonly used in underground and overhead electrical line
work; necessary safety precautions used in working in and around confined
spaces, high voltage substations, high voltage underground and overhead
circuits and equipment; applicable laws, codes and safety orders covering
electrical utility work. Knowledge of the principles of electrical
theory and methods, equipment and materials used in constructing and
connecting residential, commercial and industrial circuits, and substation
equipment. Ability to climb poles and perform difficult electrical
work under hazardous conditions. Superior ability to: read and interpret
blueprints and drawings; organize, supervise and train others in electrical
work; understand, follow and issue complex oral and written instructions.
Good ability to keep simple time and material records. |

| Incumbents of this class
may be required to work unusual hours in emergencies and be available
on an "on-call" basis. |
