| Education and Experience |
| Graduation from High school graduation or equivalent with two years of mathematics with passing grades and a minimum C overall grade-average. |

| License |
| Possession at all times an appropriate, valid California driver’s license is required. |
| |
| Typical Duties |
| In a training capacity learns the electrical trade by performing progressively more difficult and technical duties in the construction and maintenance of electrical facilities that includes the installation, maintenance, repair and testing of: |
- Traffic signals
- Water pumping and control equipment
- Electric substations, and other distribution facilities which have primary voltages up to 230,000 volts
- Installs and repairs conduit
- Installs and repairs conductors
- Installs and repairs street lighting
- Installs and repairs service equipment
- Assists Utility Electricians or other assigned supervisors/managers in performing a variety of skilled electrical work
- Does related work as required

| Work is normally performed under supervision, however, varied and progressively more difficult and technical assignments may be performed under general supervision during the advanced training. |

| Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities |
- Some knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment and materials employed in electrical work
- Some knowledge of the elementary principles of electricity
- Knowledge of mathematics through algebra
- Good ability to demonstrate a mechanical or electrical aptitude
- Good ability to follow oral and written directions
- Ability to handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines
- Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, crawl and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties
- Ability to identify color and materials normally encountered in the course of work
- Ability to learn occupational hazards and necessary work-related safety precautions
- Ability to establish and maintain tactful, courteous and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public
- Ability to work in a team based environment and achieve common goals

| Other Requirements |
- The Utility Electrician Apprentice classification is a probationary only classification
- Applicants must have normal color vision at time of appointment
- Applicants must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment
- Manual dexterity is required for this position
- Incumbents in this classification may be required to work unusual hours in emergency and prearranged situations
- Incumbents will be required to attend on their own time, Utility Electrician Apprentice school, which may be located outside the City of Santa Clara.
- Incumbents in this classification shall be required to have both satisfactory grades and attendance in the off-duty courses of education as specified by the City
