Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; and
  • One (1) year recent experience in grounds, landscape, street, water/sewer, or building maintenance, or in construction.
Possible Substitutions:
  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on the basis of one year experience equals one year education.
License
Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
 
Typical Duties

Under supervision:
  • Performs heavy manual labor in addition to operating air compressor, jackhammer, tamper, auger, space boring machine, sewer sludge pump, wayne ball, rodding machine, striping machine, spray painting equipment and miscellaneous other machinery that is used in public works and utility maintenance and construction work
  • May operate trucks and other equipment as assigned
  • Cuts out sections of asphalt, removes debris with hand shovel, sprays opening with oil, shovels hot asphalt into opening and rakes asphalt to grade for rolling
  • Mixes and applies slurry seal with a rake
  • Assists in laying main water lines and installing valves, hydrants, meters and services
  • Digs for leaks
  • Repairs leaks in service lines
  • Caulks joints and taps mains
  • May service trucks
  • Repairs, paints and sets out barricades
  • May paint and number fire hydrants
  • Cleans and repairs sewer lines
  • Installs new pipe and clean outs
  • Digs line and flushes sewer system
  • Makes, installs and maintains street curbs
  • Paints City property and buildings
  • Assists with repair and maintenance of City buildings
  • Lays forms for curbs, gutters, sump holes and manholes
  • Mixes, pours and finishes cement work and lays bricks
  • May be assigned duties such as making and repairing brooms for street sweepers, servicing automotive equipment, receiving and recording supplies and equipment
  • May assist in the installation, repair and maintenance of solar heating systems owned by the City Utility
  • Performs related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of:
  • Tools, methods, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance of street, water and sewer facilities.
Good ability to and skill in:
  • Learn more technical and difficult operations
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude
  • Perform heavy physical labor
Supervision Received
Works under the immediate supervision of higher classifications as assigned.
 
Supervision Exercised
May assist in the training of new personnel as assigned.
 
Special Conditions
Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shift work, weekends and unusual hours in emergency situations.
