| Water and Sewer Maintenance

| Education and Experience |
| Minimum Requirements: |
- Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; and
- Three (3) years as a Water Sewer Maintenance Worker I in the City of Santa Clara service.

| License & Certification |
- Possession of a valid California Commercial driver's license, Class B or above, with endorsements for Air Brakes and Tank Vehicle is required at time of application.
- Possession of a valid Water Distribution System Operator certificate (Grade D-1 or above) issued by the California Department of Health Services, and a valid Collection System Maintenance certificate (Grade 1 or above) issued by the California Water Environment Association is required at time of application filing.
- Possession of a valid Water Distribution System Operator certificate (Grade D-2 or above) is required within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Maintenance of the required (or upgraded) certificates is a condition of continued eligibility to hold status in this position.

| Current City employees appointed to Water Sewer Maintenance Worker prior to October 1, 1996 are waived of the required Collection System Certification but will be required to possess and maintain a valid Water Distribution System Operator Certificate (Grade D-1 or above) by January 1, 2007. |

| Typical Duties |
| Specific job duties of this position may not be included in the list below, nor do the examples cover all duties which may be performed. |
- Independently, with general supervision, or as a member of a crew, performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance and operation of water, recycled water, and sewer systems
- Acts as a trouble-shooter, answering complaints and service requests, finding leaks or stoppages in lines, and correcting these conditions
- Builds forms and pours concrete for pump and panel bases and transformer pads
- Measures and cuts pipe and does complete piping installation for wells and pumps
- Does maintenance work on wells and pumps, including changing of recorder charts, taking water levels, recording well meter readings, painting control panels and pumps, lubricating water meters, and making minor repairs
- Sets up tapping machines and taps into main lines
- Sets up and operates boring machine to make openings under highways and sidewalks
- Installs mains, copper service lines, hydrants, valves, meters and meter boxes
- Does soldering and caulking
- Reads grade stakes for water services, meter height, and fire hydrants
- Sets and reads grade for trenching machine
- Cleans, rods, flushes, builds and repairs, sanitary sewers, siphons, manholes, laterals and cleanouts
- Drives trucks
- May install, repair and maintain solar heating systems owned by the City, including electrical work in connection with solar installations
- Performs other related duties as assigned

Abilities |
| Considerable knowledge of: |
- Equipment, methods and materials used in the construction, maintenance and operation of water mains and services, wells, sanitary sewers, catch basins and manholes
- Pipefitting and cement work
- Construction and confined space safety
- Traffic control
|
| Good ability to and skill in: |
- Operate a variety of power equipment, including trucks, welding equipment, rodding machine, hydro-jet sewer cleaner, loader and jackhammer
- Perform heavy physical labor including the lifting of up to 90 lbs. of static weight
- Read drawings and blueprints

| Other Requirements |
| Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shifts, weekends, unusual hours in emergency situations and to be available on an "on call" basis. Incumbents of this classification may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations. Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment. |
