Silicon Valley Power Adds Cisco Systems to Growing Renewable Energy Program

Santa Clara, Calif.– October 31 , 2005 – Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara's municipal electric utility, announced today Cisco Systems (“Cisco”) has signed up to participate in its clean renewable energy program, Santa Clara Green Power . This is just one example of how Santa Clara businesses are increasingly demonstrating their commitment to the community and the environment by supporting renewable energy.

Cisco will purchase one-fourth of the output of one large-scale wind turbine, on an annual basis. Cisco joins dozens of Santa Clara businesses, including 1/2 turbine partner Agilent Technologies and Santa Clara University who are collectively supporting the development of new renewable energy projects in California. Large commitments from Santa Clara Green Power commercial customers help to clean regional air and support local economic development through the jobs and revenue resulting from these projects.

“The Santa Clara business community is showing great leadership in its growing commitment to renewable energy,” said Joyce Kinnear, Public Benefit Program Manager for Silicon Valley Power. “Participation from both the business and residential community are important to make Santa Clara Green Power a community effort towards environmental sustainability.”

All of the wind and solar energy used for the Santa Clara Green Power program comes from sources in California. By signing up for Santa Clara Green Power , Cisco's Santa Clara locations are supporting these California facilities and preventing the release of 800,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas that contributes to global climate change. This has a similar environmental impact as planting 108 acres of trees or taking 70 cars off the road for one year.

Cisco will join the U.S. EPA's Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program working to standardize green power procurement as part of best practice corporate environmental management. “EPA congratulates Cisco in becoming a Green Power Partner and applauds Cisco for its commitment to making an environmental difference,” said Kurt Johnson, Director of the U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership. Santa Clara Green Power now has three Green Power Partners among the 602 nationwide.

“Cisco believes it has a responsibility to be an active part of the community and to make a positive impact on the environment. We are pleased to be recognized by Santa Clara Green Power,” said Cisco's Global Energy Manager, Nayeem Sheikh.

With continued growth in enrollments from both residents and businesses, Santa Clara Green Power anticipates reaching its goal of 5% participation by the end of the year.
