Vacancies On Six City Commissions
Volunteers Needed to Serve
 
Santa Clara, Calif. – April 27, 2005 – Due to expiring terms, the City of Santa Clara will have vacancies on six City commissions: the Board of Library Trustees; the Civil Service Commission; the Historical & Landmarks Commission; the International Exchange Commission; the Planning Commission; and the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission.
 
The deadlines to receive applications for each commission, interview dates and times, and interview locations are as follows:
 
Civil Service Commission June 1 June 7, 7 p.m. Council Chambers

The 5-member Civil Service Commission advises the City Council on matters pertaining to Civil Service rules and regulations and acts as a Board of Review to hear petitions by Civil Service employees and applicants.
 
The 7-member Historical & Landmarks Commission provides advice on the names and renaming of streets, museums and the establishment thereof in the City, and the marking and preservation of historical landmarks and places.
 
The 7-member Planning Commission advises the City Council on matters pertaining to the physical development of Santa Clara, and makes recommendations with respect to land subdivisions, zoning as prescribed by ordinance, and more.
 
The 5-member Board of Library Trustees advises the City Council on matters related to the operation of the Santa Clara Public Library.
 
The 7-member Senior Citizens Advisory Commission advises the City Council on matters affecting people age 50 and older in Santa Clara.
 
The International Exchange Commission advises the City Council on Santa Clara’s two Sister cities – Coimbra, Portugal and Izumo, Japan – and other matters related to international exchange. The Committee consists of 7 members.
 
The City is also seeking residents who may be interested in serving on any of the City’s nine boards or commissions, or a City committee. Your name can be placed on a mailing list, and you will be notified when vacancies occur. The commissions/committee are: Board of Library Trustees, Civil Service Commission, Cultural Advisory Commission, Historical & Landmarks Commission, International Exchange Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Senior Citizens Advisory Commission, Youth Commission, and the Housing Rehabilitation Loan Committee.
 
Commissions generally meet every month, or every other month, in the evening with these exceptions; the Planning Commission sometimes meets twice per month; the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meetings are held on a weekday morning.
