Sewer services are provided to residents and
businesses in the City by the Sewer Utility. Services include
construction and maintenance of the City's sewer system and
installation of sewer lateral clean-outs upon request.
Sanitary sewer flows in the City are collected and transported
through more than 260 miles of sewer mains by way of six pumping
stations to the San Jose-Santa Clara Water Pollution Control
Plant (WPCP). The WPCP has the capacity to treat 167 million
gallons each day, and is also utilized by other cities in Santa
Clara County.
Wastewater is treated in three stages: primary treatment,
activated sludge secondary treatment, and advanced tertiary
treatment, comprised of nitrification, filtration and chlorine
disinfection. The resulting fresh water is discharged to the
South San Francisco Bay or delivered to the South Bay Water
Recycling Project.
