Ways to Make Your Home & Community Floodsafe

It looks like a wet winter is on its way! Be prepared for severe weather conditions, especially potential flooding during heavy rains, by following these guidelines:
  1. Make a family disaster plan for floods, earthquakes and fires
  2. Keep an emergency kit, battery radio & flashlights where all family members can find them
  3. Keep neighborhood storm drains clear of leaves and debris
  4. Never get in the way of work crews when it's flooding
  5. Use sandbags if needed to protect your home from rising water

  1. Never walk, bike or drive through flowing water. A foot of water can float most cars. If your car stalls in a flooded area, leave it and walk to higher ground
  2. Don't sightsee in areas of flooding or rising water. It's not safe.
  3. During heavy rains, keep your gas tank full
  4. Keep an emergency kit in your car
  5. Listen to the radio for traffic updates, and follow recommend routes

  1. Determine your risk of flooding and design an emergency evacuation plan for employees
  2. Tune to local radio and TV stations for emergency information
  3. Update emergency contact information for all employees
  4. If necessary, use sandbags to protect your business from rising water
  5. Stockpile emergency building materials & find out where you can get sandbags
  6. Help keep local creeks free of debris - join the Adopt-A-Creek program
