Teddy, from atop the newly decorated 90-foot Redwood Tree, will soon join community members and jolly Santa Claus to ring in the holiday season at the City of Santa Clara’s annual Holiday Tree Lighting in Central Park. On Friday, December 7, 2018 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. community members and their neighbors can enjoy a variety of activities, such as ice skating sessions, entertainment, crafts, food & beverages, fireworks, meet & greet with Santa and the ceremonial lighting of the tree.

The ice skating sessions will begin at 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. Each session will last one hour and cost $5 per person. Skate rental is including with the price of the skate session. Enjoy community performances by local organizations, including Buscher Middle School, Roberta Jones Jr. Theatre and Joy of Sewa. Around 5:30 p.m., look toward the main stage for the familiar “Ho Ho Ho”, as Santa will arrive from the North Pole with a procession of the Santa Clara dancers.

The first 500 youth who meet Santa will get a teddy bear reminiscent of “Teddy”, the Santa Clara holiday tree topper. “Teddy” has been a Santa Clara tradition since 1911 when the City of Santa Clara Electric Department placed the bear at the top of the holiday tree. This year, Teddy will make its 107th appearance atop the lights of the holiday tree. Our youth and the young at heart can create crafts in Santa’s Workshop or purchase a tasty treat from the community food booths.

The festivities lead up to the magical lighting of the tree at 7:00 p.m. Experience wonderment as you watch the 90-foot tree light up the night followed by a spirited, winter fireworks show! Following the fireworks will be a musical performance from Bay Area headliner, Entourage. Throughout the event, exceptional local wine and brews will be sold. The Holiday Tree Lighting will proudly feature Golden State Brewing’s Mulled Apple/Pear Sour, Chocolate/Peppermint Porter, and well-known Honey Ale. Last pour will be at 8:45 p.m.

There will be public parking at the Pavilion Lot on Kiely Boulevard and at the Central Park Library on Homestead. Attendees are encouraged to carpool or walk/bike to the event as parking is limited. Free, supervised bike and stroller parking will be available at the event. There will be no road closures associated with this event, but high traffic volume is expected. The Santa Clara Police Department can be contacted in non-emergencies at 408-615-5580 or 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency. Finally, please remember that animals are not allowed at this event per City Ordinance.

We hope you will consider attending the event. Many volunteers, community organizations, and the Parks & Recreation Commission, Department and staff have worked to provide a great event. For more information on the Santa Clara Holiday Tree Lighting, please visit or call 408-615-3140.
