SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The survey results are in, and City of Santa Clara employees are overwhelming satisfied with the City as an employer. Of the 575 employees who responded to the 2019 survey, 77% of survey takers said they are satisfied overall with the City as an employer. Nearly half, or 45%, of full-time City employees participated in the survey.

The employee survey also found:

  • 91% of respondents feel their jobs support the City’s overall goals and priorities;
  • 92% agree that the City plays an important role in the community;
  • 91% agreed with the statement that their co-workers are doing quality work;
  • 74% felt valued at their job; and
  • The performance of direct supervisors and peer co-workers receive the highest marks.

“The results from an employee survey provide a beneficial check on the health of an organization’s workforce,” said Deanna J. Santana, City Manager. “Employees are the City’s biggest asset. Knowing what’s going well for staff and where there are opportunities for improvement are vital for helping increase employee engagement and retention levels.”

Based on the survey results, areas for improvement include internal communications, responsiveness to employee concerns and willingness to try new approaches to solve problems. While the survey found most employees agree that they are well-informed about issues affecting their jobs and departments, under 60% felt the same way about issues outside of their department. Just over half, or 52%, of employees agree that the City’s supportive of new ideas. This feedback is an indication that employees are eager to innovate and bring new ideas to the table while the City must update antiquated processes and manual administration in order to match staff’s innovative drive.

The City Council will hear the results of the City of Santa Clara’s first-ever employee survey at the Oct. 8, 2019 meeting.

EMC Research conducted the survey from May 23-July 3, 2019. The survey results have an overall margin of error of ±4.09 percentage points.
