Why I Wear the Badge
#WhyIWearTheBadge is a campaign designed to highlight the diversity and commitment of the law enforcement profession. The badge is a symbol of courage, strength, and integrity. With the display of the badge comes great responsibility. So why do hundreds of thousands of men and women wear the badge each day?
Each month, the Santa Clara Police Department will recognize our greatest and most valued assets…our employees. This month, we would like to introduce you to Detective Jonathan Pate. Det. Pate was raised in San Jose and graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Det. Pate started with the Santa Clara Police Department in 2001, when he graduated from the Gavilan Police Academy. Det. Pate has been with SCPD for over 17 years and fortunate to have a diversity of assignments. Det. Pate worked patrol, the Special Enforcement Team (SET), the Special Response Team (SRT) and is currently the Financial Crimes Detective. In his current assignment, Det. Pate is most proud of educating and helping senior citizens with financial scams and identify thefts. This assignment has been the most rewarding in his career.
Det. Pate is also heavily involved with community engagement in Santa Clara. You may recognize Det. Pate from the numerous PAL fishing trips, Citizen Police Academy and the PAL Toy Cup soccer fundraisers.
In 2005, Det. Pate was also awarded the Medal of Merit for saving lives from a burning building. His courage and valor saved the lives of 8 sleeping Santa Clara University students before the front of the building burst into flames.
More importantly, Det. Pate prides himself with being a husband and father. You might find Det. Pate and his family playing soccer, fishing, snowboarding or camping.
Why I wear the badge:
“I originally became interested in law enforcement when I took a few classes in college. I had some family friends that worked for a local agency and they took me on some ride-alongs. It was then I knew I wanted to be a police officer. I loved the idea that I would go to work each day having no idea what to expect. I knew it would be a challenging career with a multitude of experiences.”
Why you enjoy being a police officer:
“I enjoy the variety that police work offers. Every day is different. There are the fast-paced calls that many consider typical police work, but there are also the opportunities to serve the community and help others out through a difficult time in their life. I enjoy working in Santa Clara because we have great support from our community and I get to work with amazing men and women that aren’t just co-workers, but more like a second family.”
