Update on Mission City Memorial Park

Post Date:08/14/2019 3:18 PM
The City is aware of the recent concerns regarding the upkeep and maintenance of City-owned cemetery grounds. We want to thank the community for their continued patience as we work to immediately address these concerns.

The Mission City Memorial Park (MCMP), a 25 acre park, is one of two City cemeteries that the City of Santa Clara maintains. The amount of labor required to accomplish the more detailed grounds maintenance at MCMP has recently increased with the discontinued use of Roundup (a toxic chemical which was used in the past to control weeds and grasses around headstones, flat markers, curb lines, and pathways): three full-time grounds maintenance staff have been supporting the MCMP. To improve MCMP maintenance, the City recently hired two additional part-time staff. The City is reviewing long term permanent staffing levels and evaluating alternatives to chemical use strategies that are more efficient for maintaining the MCMP in the long-term.

Progress Made

As we begin to increase staffing levels and evaluate alternative strategies to allow efficiency, the City has pulled staff resources from other divisions to assist with the immediate maintenance needs. Below are some before and after photos taken the week of Aug. 12, 2019 at Mission City Memorial park.
