SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The City of Santa Clara is now accepting applications from residents who are interested in being considered for a City Council vacancy and live in Council District 5. The Council-appointed position would fill the remaining District 5 term which ends November 2020. The City Clerk’s Office is accepting applications through 5 p.m. Feb. 28, 2020.

At the Feb. 11, 2020 meeting, the Council unanimously approved filling the vacancy through an appointment process. To be considered for appointment by the Council, the candidate must be a Santa Clara resident, a qualified registered voter, and reside in District 5.

District 5 is made up of what’s considered downtown Santa Clara. View City Council District Map or check your address through an interactive District Map.

The Council also determined the schedule for making the appointment:
• Feb. 12, 2020 – Applications now being accepted from interested persons for the Council District 5 vacancy
• Feb. 28, 2020 – The City Clerk’s Office must receive all applications no later than 5 p.m.
• March 9, 2020 – Special City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. to interview and appoint one candidate to fill the partial term for Council District 5 ending November 2020

Completed applications will be accepted in person by the City Clerk’s Office, located at Santa Clara City Hall, 1500 Warburton Ave., through the 5 p.m. Feb. 28, 2020 deadline. Candidates will need to show their two proofs of residency. For questions, contact the City Clerk’s Office at or call 408-615-2220.

A four-fifths vote, or five out of the six remaining councilmembers, will be needed to approve an appointment to the Council seat.

The position became vacant when Councilmember Patricia M. Mahan resigned from her District 5 seat effective Feb. 1, 2020.

The seven-member City Council acts as the legislative body, representing the residents of Santa Clara and is empowered by the City Charter to formulate citywide policy.
