Tips, Tools and Programs for Saving Money and Energy While Sheltering at Home

Post Date:03/24/2020 5:00 PM

The City of Santa Clara and Silicon Valley Power (SVP) continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19. As the pandemic has impacted our community, we understand the potential increased financial struggles our customers face as schools and businesses close. With more people remaining at home for extended periods of time, households may see an increase in energy use, causing higher electric bills.

How SVP is helping our customers

  • SVP will not be shutting off service due to non-payment. This applies to both residential and commercial customers and will remain in effect during this health emergency.
  • All planned outages have been suspended during this health emergency.

Tips, Tools and Programs to Save Energy and Money

Here are some tips and easy-to-use resources to help manage your home energy usage. You can find more tips on our website at siliconvalleypower.com/tips.

Heating and cooling

  • Use a programmable thermostat and set it to 68°F when at home and awake, and 58°F when away or asleep, health permitting. Wear a sweater or use a blanket to stay warm.
  • If everyone is gathered in one room, consider using an electric space heater instead of central heat. Use our Space Heater Guide to select a space heater that is right for your use, and always remember to read and follow all safety guidelines.
  • Warm your home naturally by opening blinds or curtains during sunnier hours. If temperatures are warmer outside, open the windows to let in warm air.

Electronics and appliances

  • Set your computer to sleep or hibernate modes, which can be activated through your computer's power settings.
  • Plug all personal electronics into a power strip and simply turn off the power strip when electronics are not in use. This includes game consoles, which can draw a lot of power in standby mode.
  • Wash and dry only full loads of laundry and use cold water settings when possible. Hang dry clothes when the weather is good.
  • Cook meals in the microwave instead of the oven and keep pots covered when using the stove.
  • Let food cool down before placing it in the refrigerator. Warm food raises the temperature inside and makes the refrigerator work harder.

Keeping Customers and Employees Safe by Closing Service Centers

The safety and health of our customers, employees and communities we serve is our primary responsibility. We have instructed our employees who have direct customer contact to take social distancing precautionary measures. We are committed to our continued effort addressing customer service needs.
