Plan Review

What Is Plan Review?

Plan review, also known as plan check, is a step that is often required before a building permit can be issued.

The plans examiner/reviewer will check all the proposed plans, construction drawings, reports, and calculations provided by applicants to ensure they follow the Building Code. For file format and submittal requirements, please read the Electronic Plan Submittal Guide (PDF).

Depending on the proposed project, building permits could be reviewed by other departments beyond the Building Division (e.g., Santa Clara Fire Department). Check out Single-Family Home Projects or Non-Residential & Multi-Family Buildings for requirements to make sure your drawings are acceptable.

For ongoing reviews, contact your assigned reviewers or check your permit status on the Permitting Online Portal (POP). Applicants will get email notifications when plan check comments are available.
