Noise Monitoring Near Levi's Stadium

Map view of noise monitor locations. Locations include Ave De Lose Arboles, Hughes Elementary, Cheeney and Lenox, and Cheeney Street

The City has installed noise monitors south and east of Levi’s Stadium to record ongoing noise levels in those neighborhoods. Noise sources in these neighborhoods include:

  • aircrafts approaching and/or departing from San Jose Mineta International Airport
  • events at Levi’s Stadium
  • traffic and typical neighborhood activities

The monitors record the noise level at any moment in weighted decibels (dBA).

What are weighted decibels? A measure of sound energy level weighted to represent what is normally perceptible to the human ear (i.e., excluding very low and very high-pitched sounds).

Where is the Data? How Does it Work?

The noise monitor data is available through an external website maintained by the City’s acoustic engineering consultant. Noise levels are presented on the website in three different formats.

A button on the webpage allows you to toggle a filter on the tables to remove the noise caused by airplanes from San Jose Mineta International Airport when viewing the sound level status. You can also adjust the date and the display time settings.

Below is a sample table showing the one-hour average noise level in weighted decibels (dBA LEQ,1hr). It uses an algorithm to exclude airplane noises to better represent sound levels directly related to stadium events.

The City’s permits for the stadium state that stadium events should not cause the one-hour average noise level in the neighborhood to go over 60 dBA LEQ,1hr.
