The City of Santa Clara reached out to the community extensively about adding bike facilities on Lafayette Street between Laurelwood Road and Reed Street. In the 2018 Bicycle Plan Update, the recommended design for this section is a Class IV protected bike lane.

To add a Class IV protected bike lane, street parking on Lafayette Street between Memorex Drive and Parker Street will need to be removed. The City studied how this parking removal would affect parking in the nearby neighborhood. The study results and project ideas were shared at several public meetings. On September 12, 2023, the City Council voted to remove the parking and install a Class IV protected bike lane as part of a pilot project.
