City of Santa Clara
MenuCrosswalk Flags Pilot Program
The City of Santa Clara is conducting a pilot project to evaluate the effectiveness of pedestrians using brightly colored flags when using crosswalks. The intent is to raise driver awareness for pedestrians using crosswalks and to increase pedestrian safety. These flags are not formal traffic control devices.
Under the pilot program, pedestrian crossing flags will be placed at 27 locations where pedestrians may encounter challenges crossing the road. The purpose of the pilot project is to evaluate whether pedestrians use and return the flags, the effectiveness of the flags (which has not been well documented) and the level of maintenance needed to replace lost flags.
