Crosswalk Flags Program

Crosswalk with flags

The City of Santa Clara has implemented a Crosswalk Flags Program whereby brightly colored pedestrian crossing flags have been installed for use at select marked crosswalks where pedestrians may encounter challenges crossing the road. At these crosswalks, pedestrians have an option to use the flags to signal to vehicle drivers that a pedestrian will be crossing the roadway in the crosswalk. The intent is to raise driver awareness for pedestrians using crosswalks and to increase pedestrian safety. These flags are not formal traffic control devices.

To date, crosswalk flags have been placed at 30 locations where pedestrians may encounter challenges crossing the road.
