Historical and Landmarks Commission

The Historical and Landmarks Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to historical places and landmarks. This Commission provides advice on the naming and renaming of streets, museums and the establishment thereof in the City, and the marking and preservation of historical landmarks and places.

The Historical and Landmarks Commission consists of seven Commissioners that are volunteers and are appointed by the City Council. To be eligible, you must be a registered voter and resident of Santa Clara, and may not hold any paid office in, or be employed by, the City of Santa Clara. For details call the City Clerk's office at (408) 615-2220. The Historical and Landmarks Commission may also be contacted by email at HistoricalLandmarksCommission@santaclaraca.gov.

Santa Clara Celebrates National Historic Preservation Month

In 2024, the Historical and Landmarks Commission (HLC) announced the launch of the Historical and Landmarks “Art Meets History” Banner project for the month of May in honor of National Historic Preservation Month.  The new initiative celebrates historic preservation and showcases our heritage, events and landmarks that define our area.  It is the intent that this project will be an ongoing and annual event. For 2024, the HLC chose to start on the state’s first highway, El Camino Real, between Lafayette and Scott Boulevard.

In 2025, the program expanded to include three additional banners, with displays now on El Camino Real and Great America Parkway.
